The D-backs' Day One, preserved in black — this is what expansion era collector culture looks like. All-black crown and flat visor sit on a structured 59Fifty silhouette, with the classic Arizona Diamondbacks "D" logo embroidered front-and-center in infrared pink, white, and blue. The visor's edge and under-brim are lined in a vivid red, giving the hat a sharp pop of color you only see from the right angle. On the left panel, the 1998 Inaugural Season commemorative side patch is fully embroidered — a fanged diamondback snake with a baseball in its open mouth, framed by the words "1998 Inaugural Season" in pink text on a blue banner — this is the original team logo used in the D-backs' first-ever year of existence. The back carries the classic MLB Batterman logo, rendered here in the same pink and white colorway to match the front. Under the brim: solid red, catching light with every head turn.
The Arizona Diamondbacks joined the National League West in 1998 as an expansion franchise, playing their first-ever game on March 31 at the brand-new Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix before 3.6 million fans showed up that debut season — third-highest attendance in all of MLB that year. They were built to compete fast, and by 2001 they were World Series champions, the quickest expansion team in baseball history to reach the top. This hat is from the very beginning of that story. The snake on the side patch isn't the cleaned-up logo the franchise would later move toward — it's the original, aggressive, full-fangs version the team debuted with, paired with a black crown and an infrared under-brim that reads like a custom colorway even though it shipped this way from New Era.
How to Wear It
The Streetwear Edit
Black New Balance 990v3 or a pair of Nike Air Max 95s in black/infrared — the red under-brim ties directly into the 95's classic color split. Wear it with straight-leg black Dickies, a washed black heavyweight tee, and a black Carhartt WIP chore coat left open. The pink embroidery becomes the focal point of the whole fit, and nothing else needs to compete.
Her Way
Oversized black vintage MLB crewneck or a fitted black ribbed mock-neck, light-wash wide-leg denim, and chunky white New Balance 2002R. The pink snake logo reads as an intentional accent color against the denim — not a sports reference, just a piece. Layer a thin silver chain, keep everything else minimal, and let the hat carry the moment.
The Archives
This is a patch hat from year one of a franchise that went on to win it all in three seasons — that's not common. The 1998 inaugural patch is the original snake logo in its most aggressive form, the same branding the team wore when Travis Lee hit the franchise's first home run and Jay Bell anchored the infield in an empty expansion roster trying to prove itself. Pair it with a vintage Starter jacket from the same era, slim black cargos, and Jordan 11 Bred — the black, white, and red colorway maps almost perfectly to what's on your head.
