The D-Backs before they were dynasty — the 1998 inaugural-season colorway that started it all. Purple woolblend crown meets a black visor with a teal under brim that pops the moment you tilt the bill. Front and center is the original D-snake logo in teal and copper with fine orange outlining — the coiled diamondback that defined one of baseball's most distinctive brand identities. On the left panel sits the inaugural-season side patch: a serpent head biting a baseball, fangs out, with "1998 Inaugural Season" arched across the top in teal script on a purple and copper shield — intricate embroidery, silver-bordered. The back panel carries the Batterman MLB logo stitched in black and teal with copper trim, and teal eyelets dot the crown throughout.

The Diamondbacks debuted on March 31, 1998, at Bank One Ballpark — an expansion franchise built from scratch in the Sonoran Desert. That first year they drew over 3.6 million fans (third-best in all of baseball) wearing one of the most visually ambitious color palettes the league had ever seen: purple, teal, copper, black. No other team looked like them. Within three years they'd be World Series champions. This hat documents year one — before the ring, before Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were household names together, when Bank One Ballpark was brand new and Arizona was still figuring out what kind of baseball town it was. That context lives in the patch.

How to Wear It

The Streetwear Edit
Purple is a loaded color in sneaker culture and this hat leans right into it. Pair it with a washed-black oversized tee, some slim-tapered cargo pants in olive or charcoal, and Jordan 5 "Grape" or the New Balance 550 in purple/white. The teal under brim connects to any color blocking that picks up blue-green — think Sacai collabs or the Nike Dunk Low "Green Noise." Keep the rest of the fit minimal so the hat does the heavy lifting.

Her Way
Fitted hats in bold colorways work best when the rest of the outfit stays clean and considered. Style this one with a cropped black mock-neck, wide-leg linen trousers in cream or off-white, and chunky white sneakers — New Balance 9060 or Air Force 1. The purple-teal-copper palette is rich enough that jewelry becomes optional; a simple gold chain is all you need. Carries the same energy as a vintage league tee but far more intentional.

The Archives
This is a timestamp hat — a wearable primary source from Year One of a franchise. It belongs in the same conversation as inaugural-season pieces from the Marlins, Rockies, and Devil Rays: the early-90s expansion wave that reshaped the NL and AL maps. The original D-Backs color scheme was designed by Anne Occi of MLB and Greg Fisher of Campbell Fisher Design — it was deliberate, layered, and unlike anything in the league at the time. Purple and copper in the desert. If you collect by era or by story, 1998 D-Backs sits in a very specific, very finite chapter.
